. The
upcoming conference promises the most wide-ranging, vibrant program ever
offered. Rita Colwell, director of the National Science Foundation, will
present the keynote address, and visionaries and well-known leaders will
speak on the state of the field. Experts will participate in lively panel
discussions, including two sessions on the use of information technology
for homeland security. Several awards will be presented, including the
High Performance Bandwidth Challenge, sponsored by Qwest. The
technical program includes 31 full and half-day tutorials, 67 technical
papers, and 16 Masterworks sessions. Over 140 participants will set up
industry and research exhibits. An education program offers hands-on sessions
for teacher and faculty teams to help them incorporate computational tools
into the classroom. SCinet, the conference's high-performance, production-quality
network backbone uses the most advanced technology to make available more
than 55 gigabits per second of wide area network connectivity to the national
networks. In
addition to the conference's program of technical presentations and technology
displays, for the first time in conference history, SC2002 technical program
participants can take part in IntelliBadge, a demonstration of "smart"
technology. IntelliBadge participants will track events that fit their
needs and interests, locate people of similar interests, view statistics
on the conference, and win valuable prizes. About
